Watch how we're preventing homelessness!

About Raising the Roof

Raising the Roof is a national, homeless prevention charity that creates, restores, and preserves safe, decent, and affordable places for Canada's most vulnerable people.

Toronto loses 10,000 units of affordable housing every year. The buildings don't go anywhere, but rent increases drive prices up and people out of their homes. To help with the housing affordability crisis, we develop new affordable housing, and preserve the long-term affordability for existing tenanted buildings.

To ensure the tenants have ongoing wraparound supports to maintain their housing and achieve their goals, we work with some of Toronto's most respected social services providers who help people who are homeless or at incredible risk of becoming homeless live with dignity and support.

When the units need renovations or repairs, the work gives our social enterprise contractor partners the opportunity to train and employ people with barriers to employment in the trades. Through these partnerships, the work of creating and maintaining affordable housing benefits the people who most need the work.

We have created and preserved 58 homes so far across the GTA, in North York, Scarborough, East York, the west end, and Caledon, and we plan to keep on creating more!

Join us on Saturday, February 28th, 2026 for the Coldest Night of the Year - a national, family-friend fundraising event geared towards raising vital support for those most vulnerable. By participating in the Coldest Night of the Year, you will help us realize the vision of a safe, decent, and affordable place for everyone in Canada.
