The Markham Food Bank was founded in 1984 to help the residents of Markham meet their short-term need for food. Concerned about people going hungry in the town they started the food bank in a portable situated on Church Street, which was obtained with the aid of Alma Walker (then town Mayor). At that time they assisted eight to ten families a month. All the food was stored in one large Tupperware container.
Since that time, Markham has grown from a small town to Canada's most diverse city and the Markham food bank now serves up to 400 families every month from many different backgrounds and cultures.
Our clients ever changing needs are important to us. Our goal now is to be able to provide more fresh produce, protein, and ethnically appropriate food items for our many unique and wonderful families..
