The Challenge

About St. Leonard's Place, Peel

St. Leonard’s Place Peel has been active in the Brampton community for over 50 years, providing residential support for men over 18 years of age who have mental health and/or substance use problems, as well as those who have been involved with the justice system. Last year, St Leonard’s supported 259 individuals in their efforts to rebuild their lives and integrate back into the community.

We offer a multitude of service to the men including transitional housing, three meals a day. access to an on-site health team, recreation therapy, case management, services that focus on men that are aging, employment support and group programming. Our multidisciplinary approach to care is client centered, strength based and individualized - care plans are developed for each client around individual needs.

Our New Leaf program is an 18-bed program that is open to adult males who are at risk of

homelessness and experiencing mental illness, addictions, and/or conflict with the law. Over

the past year, SLPP has continued to work towards a strength based, housing first model of

care. Upon receiving a referral for this program, an Intake Assessment is booked within 1 week. The Intake Assessment interview has recently been streamlined in order to collect relevant information in a timely manner and in a way that is client centered and keeps potential residents at ease.

The Rotary Resolve House (RRH) program is for New Leaf residents who have progressed and

shown stability, but still require SLPP’s continued support. Those in the RRH program continue to work with their Case Management team on identified areas

SLPP’s residential programs provide residents with the tools required to

make prosocial changes permanently. These programs aim to build positive community integration and poverty prevention. Topics addressed through these programs include: personal care, goal setting, nutrition and healthy living, positive communication and prosocial problem solving and decision making. The program builds the capacity of these individuals to eventually live independently and with confidence in the broader community.

SLPP also operates a 75 bed Community Residential Facility program, supporting men exiting the Federal Prison System. Residents in this program are supported for Community Release by the Parole Board of Canada. By supporting and monitoring these individuals, working closely with Corrections Services Canada, SLPP is directly contributing to public safety and ensuring the men under our care are able to make the most of their chance to reintegrate. In the past year, 200 men were supported in the CRF program with the majority successfully returning to the community on Full Parole, Statutory Release or Warrant Expiry.

Starting in the Winter of 2020, SLPP has opened seasonal programs Out of the Cold and In From the Heat.

In From the Heat operates daily in the height of summer and allows homeless men an opportunity to cool off, have a shower, get a meal and receive hygiene items.

Out of the Cold runs nightly during the winter months, giving homeless men a warm place to sleep, a meal and access to laundry and shower facilities.

For both seasonal programs, additional support is offered in the form of referrals to housing and addictions programs and transportation to alternate programs if we are full at the time.

Our VISION is We are an innovative leader committed to building safe and healthier communities of inclusion that care for and value each and every individual.

Our MISSION is We are dedicated to supporting our clients, building their capacity and enabling the development of key life skills through evidence-informed holistic programs and services that optimize quality of life.

Our VALUES are:
