Nanaimo

Hosted by ICCS Nanaimo

437Walkers60Teams66Volunteers5°C

The Coldest Night of the Year is a winterrific family-friendly walk to raise money for local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness. Team up, walk, and fundraise! It’s cold out there... but there’s no place like home.

Community Sponsors

Nanaimo (ICCS Nanaimo) is super grateful for our fantastic 2022 sponsors! View all sponsors >

Event Day Details

Save the date - CNOY Day is February 26, 2022!

Join us in-person on Saturday, February 26, 2022. If you can't make it in person, don't worry - you can walk any day during February and still be part of the Coldest Night fun!

Important Notes

For those who are walking together on the 26th – rain or shine it is going to be a fantastic day! Teams can start to gather to check in any time after 4 pm, at our starting/ending point at Maffeo Sutton Park. There is plenty of parking, but with so many of us gathering, spaces may well fill up quickly, so if you are able to carpool or come by public transport, please consider doing so.

When your team arrives to check in, you will be given a card indicating your start time. Though we are keeping the event completely outdoors, to avoid having all 300 + of us squeezing together on the first leg of the walk together (both the 2 km and the 5 km walks start out in the same direction), we will send teams off in 15 minute increments, starting at 4:45, with team captains coordinating to keep their groups together and happy – with lots of cheers to celebrate your team’s start and finish!

For those on the 5km route, we will have a rest stop half way, with coffee and hot chocolate provided by Starbucks, and there will be a nice warm soup to greet all walkers when they finish their route.

It should be a fun and festive day! Even more, it will be a day to celebrate so many of us coming together to make a difference for our community. Thank you for taking part, and walking for change!

Check-in

  • All walkers must check-in personally to participate in the in-person event on Saturday, February 26, 2022.
  • Toques! Fundraising walkers who raise $150+ (or $75+ for those under 18) will receive a CNOY toque as a thank you on event day, while supplies last.
  • No money or cheques will be processed at check-in.

Have questions? Visit our FAQ section!

Schedule

  • 4:00 pm: Check-in opens
  • 5:00 pm: Opening remarks
  • 5:15 pm: Walker send off (all distances)
  • 5:30 pm: Light meal served
  • 6:00 pm: Check-in closes
  • 6:30 pm: Rest stop closes
  • 7:00 pm: Route closes

Route Details

  • Route Distances: 2 km or 5 km
  • Rest stop: There will be one rest stop on the 5km route with yummy snacks and drinks
  • Signage: All routes will be well-signed with our bold blue CNOY signs
  • Route Support: Route marshals, rest stop hosts, and sweep vehicle drivers will provide support along the route
  • 12 and under walkers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at all times

Toque Pick-up

In-person walkers can pick up their toques at walker check-in on February 26th. For our wonderful virtual walkers, there will be 2 toque pick up times in the week before the event:

  • Tuesday, February 22nd from 3pm to 5 pm - ICCS main Admin office: #3 – 1200 Princess Royal Avenue
  • Thursday, February 24th from 3 pm to 5 pm - NEW - ICCS Community Offices, above the Nanaimo Bakery and Café at 2025 Bowen Road (entrance on the side of the building at Meredith Road – will be signposted)
  • Team captains should plan to pick up toques for their whole team if they wish

Handling Money

We cannot process cash or cheques at our in-person event. Here's what you can do:

  • Credit Card: The Best Option! Simple, secure, automatically tax receipted for gifts of $20+. Visit the Donate page, share your personal page link, or have your donor call CNOY Head Office.
  • Cheques: The Old Faithful - made out to Coldest Night of the Year with your name on the Memo line. Mail them to CNOY Head Office along with your completed pledge sheet.
  • Cash: You have 2 options:
  • 1. Login to FundHub, click “Enter $$ and Cheques,” create pledges for your cash donations, pay them off with your personal credit card, and keep the cash. OR...
  • 2. Write a cheque (made out to “Coldest Night of the Year”) for the total amount of cash you’ve collected. Mail it to the CNOY Head Office with your completed pledge sheet.

What to Bring

A few common sense suggestions:

  • A cell phone for emergencies (recommended but not required)
  • Good waterproof shoes/boots for walking
  • Warm coat and mitts/gloves
  • A face mask for personal use or if you need to go inside
  • Extra snacks if you have allergies or food sensitivities
  • Your own water bottle
  • A passion for the charity you're walking and fundraising for

Waivers

All participants must register online this year and accept the electronic waiver.

  • When they register online, they will automatically accept an electronic waiver, which is all that is needed for adults.
  • If you have youth or children on your team, they will need to have their parent or guardian sign a printed paper waiver.
  • Someone on your team (like you!) must take a photo of all child/youth waivers and send them to waivers@cnoy.org.

About ICCS Nanaimo

As ICCS, our aim is: To provide shelter and care for those in need.

Through housing and outreach programs, we help people in crisis stabilize and find the support, resources and services they need to recover and be well. Currently, we run 13 programs across 7 sites for people experiencing or at risk of homelessness. We also provide Outreach support and access to subsidized housing – all intended to support clients to move from crisis to security, independence and well-being. Our programs range from crisis shelter, through longer term supportive housing, to life skills and pre-employment training to help people return to independence in the community.

Walk with us to show Nanaimo that we care about our community, including the homeless and those in crisis!
